About Imua Outrigger Canoe Club

The Name

Imua means "go forward" in Hawaiian.

The Club

Imua Outrigger Canoe Club is an amateur, non-profit organization that competes against other clubs throughout Southern California in 6-man outrigger canoes ranging from 5-minute sprints to 5-hour/36-mile competitions. Founded in 1970, Imua Outrigger Canoe Club is comprised of adventure-minded adults of various ages who enjoy the competition along with the sense of ohana and aloha achieved through the ancient sport of Polynesian canoeing. We are dedicated to preserving and promoting the environment, and give back to the community through various local charities.

In the past five seasons, Imua has increased its level of competition by consistently placing within the top three crews within various divisions. In 2007, Imua dominated the Iron season and won the Ironman Champs perpetual trophy for the third year in a row and earned a total of 67 1st-3rd place medals for the entire racing season.

New Member Information

Imua Outrigger Canoe Club is based Newport Beach, California and welcome adventure minded adults with or without prior paddling experience. For practice days and times, go the Practice Schedule link.

Imua accommodates all levels of competition and commitment. Those with no paddling experience, known in the paddling community as Novices, are provided instruction, compete in shorter races and encouraged to join at any time. Imua also welcomes paddlers from other local clubs and those visiting the Newport Beach area.

Club Dues and Other Costs

For the 2008 racing season, club dues are only $325 if paid in full by April 30, 2008.

Dues are non-refundable and include all SCORA race entry fees, 9-man season escort boat fees, and entry fees to other races where Imua races as a team including Catalina. Dues also cover the use and maintenance of equipment, towing of canoes to races, and use of club paddles for novice members.

When to Pay
You have two options:
1) Pay $325 in full before April 30, 2008. That is before the first race. This will give the coaching staff time to put boats together for those members who have paid or set-up a payment plan.
2) Three installments of $120 due on or before April 1st, May 1st, and June 1st.

How to Pay
Dues are payable to Imua Outrigger Canoe Club via check or cash.

Lower Your Dues!
If you sign up a (paid) boat by June 1, 2008 for our Corporate Challenge Fundraiser you will receive $25 dollars off dues. $50 dollars off for a VIP boat. Cathy Viscounty is the first to receive $50 dollars off for bringing in a VIP boat! Refunds are paid to the club member after June 1, 2008.

Optional or recommended items include water-friendly or wicking shirts during practice (e.g. Patagonia Capeline or Nike Dry-fit) and shorts (board or neoprene), gloves, water shoes (e.g. Teva, dive booties), and hydration and snacks for practices.
